The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it need to comply with certain requirements. In other words, all .MOBI websites should be developed to be viewed faultlessly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The requirements have provoked some questions in view of the fact that the gTLD is the only one that specifies what devices should be able to open a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be built in such a way as to be opened by the majority of web browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
